Sail Boat

Realize Your Dream … Sign up for Sailing School

The great, wide, open sea, many have dreamt of conquering it. To feel the wind in your hair and forget about your problems. Many wish to cross the deepest seas and sail the oceans of the world. That is quite a dream, and many have drowned in it!

To realise your dream you must start by learning how to sail. So sign up with a sailing school and at least learn the basics of sailing - your life may depend on it.

It is a good idea to know how to swim, but if you don't, remember that not all sailors know how to swim. The possibility of falling in the water is quite small, unless you’re sailing a small dinghy. If you have a ‘decent sized’ boat and you’re not sailing alone, the risk of going overboard is quite small. Besides, sailing schools will only let you out with a life jackets and an experienced teacher.

Some people get seasick. You can take medication to avoid seasickness. If you keep yourself busy with a lot of boat activities you should be OK. It’s all in the mind, if you’re mind is occupied then there’d be no room for thinking about seasickness. If start feeling seasick get out in the fresh air and look at the horizon - this usually works for me!

Young or old, weak or strong… it doesn’t really matter. Modern sailing boats and equipment are easy to use and should enable anyone to set sail with ease and comfort.

If money is an issue, then worry not; There are sailing schools that offer sailing lessons by the hour at quite reasonable rates. Sign up with a certified commercial sailing school. Not having your own boat is not a disadvantage. Join a sailing club and you will find many skippers looking for crew giving you access to different boats at little expense. Maintaining your own boat is expensive. For the same price you can probably spend longer actually sailing on a sailing holiday organised by your sailing school.

You can gain sailing skills and experience if you go out sailing as a crew-member. If you have the skill and a good reputation, the door to sailing opportunities will open its way for you.

Sailing is not complicated. Learning how to use the different equipment and the ‘sailor’s language’ will take a little time, but sooner or later the entire process will no longer seem complicated or difficult.

Signing up for sailing school can be a tough life-changing decision, if you want to succeed in sailing you have to pay the price, both in terms of money, and in effort.

Don’t expect it to be smooth sailing all the way, sometimes it will be rough, but the effort will be worth it in the end.
